MESSRS. SHORT AND SON'S NEW PREMISES.

(From ;'Th€ Colonist," July 5.) New premises for Messrs. Short and Son tailors and mercers, have been erected in Trafalgar street, next to Messrs. Trathen and Co.'s The building is a two-storey one, erected in brick, with a cement front with panels tuck pointed m brick. The frontage of the shop is 16ft. Biu., with, a depth ol 50ft. A hanging verandah protects the patent window fronts from the sun, and ample natural light k provided for the shop by a prismatic plate glass window above the roof of the verandah, which is two feet below the upper floor of the building, the ceilings and walls of which are covered with the- new fire-resisting material known as poilite. At the centre of the back wall of the shcp a handsome staircase, which branches out on either side, and is lighted with a lead light window, leads to the tailors' workroom and fitting room, which are divided by a glazed screen, on the upper door. An abundance of light is provided by side windows and skylights. The whole of the interior wood work has been finished in stained rimu, and presents an effective appearance. The show wiiv-lows are on either side of a central doorway, and a-bove the plate glass fronts, are very pretty lead lights, while below the name of the firm and the nature of the business is set forth in gold letters on a black background. The new building is a decided improvement to that, side of Trafalgar-st. The new premises were designed and built by Messrs. Johnson and Manssen, of Nelson, and the sub-contractors were: Messrs. Robertson Bros., Ltd.y show windows, lead lights and joinery.; Messrs. Wilmot and Cross, plumbers; Messrs. Louisson Bros., painters; Mr. E. Grirnmett, plastering; and Mr. J. Wyllie, ironwork. The new building will be ready for occupation shortly. In connection with the opening of their new premises, Messrs. Short and Son have secured the services of Mr. David Watson, talior and cutter, late of Messrs. Marshal and Co., Jermyn stret, London, and more recently with Southwell Coultas, Melbourne.
