NELSON BOWLING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING.'

Qr r o ]n 'Tlio Unionist," June 10.) The annual general meeting of the Nelson Bowling Chili was hold last night at the club-house, when tlio retiring president (Mr T. A. H.» Field, M.P.) presided over a good "attendance of : members. A motion was canird expressing the club's deepest .sympathy with the relatives of. three men)hers «i the club who had passed away during tho year— Messrs Martin "Lighlbaiid, U. S. Cosier, and II Trent. • Tho annual report, which had been printed and circulated among members, was as follows :— Member-.hip.—The o-luVk membership still shows a.i int:ro;\;.:\ ii:dicaf.in^ that bowling is beromii'ii a popular pas Lime. Twelve mny'lockers were ;iru", ickd, hut this is quite ijuicli-fjuiile. The chief difficulty is whoiv to put new cues. Tlu\ Green.---The green ay.d its sur-1 rouudings. hare much improved _in general appearance, and tho playing surface has more than come up to expectations. The advice given by Mr. Toinhlin, the club's supervisor, together with the work of the committee — Messrs. Haldane, Moore and Jacka--aided b^ the club's groundsman, Mr. Pati?hett, has changed the aspect of tho green from the previous year, and there is the likelihood of a still much better green by next season. The grub, unfortunately, is still much in evidence. The Club's Competitions.—These were carried out on similar lines to those of previous years, with increased entries in several cases. In many instances there was a, certain drag in getting matches off, several members leaving the games until the. last moment, thus causing-inconvenience and annoyance to the more prompt players. In view of the difficulty experienced it is apparent that either there are too many competitions or the nature of them too protracted, and the Match Committee make a recommendation that the muwbtM' of competitions be the same, but modified in respect to play as follows : — Senior championship (non-sectional), on similar lines to Championship Pairs; Junior championship: Ditto. President's Pairs: As at present. '■ Vice-President's Pairs: As for Pra- , sident's Pairs. Championship Pairs: Best two out of three. All finals to be best two out cf three. If thfso recommendations are acceptable the difficulty of getting maU-ht'.s off will be ■minimised. ' The Season's Winners. Senior Championship: T. Haldane. ■ Messrs. Hafkness, Angus, llichards, Kempthonie and McKee tied for run- - ner-up, but time did net permit of a 1 play oft". Junior Championship: H. Leaper; runner-up, A. I). Burns. - President's Pairs: G. H. Clutten and T. HnldaiiL' (••'< ; runners-uo, G. Hogg : and 11. IJaitroiJi f.s). Vice-President's Pairs: A. G. Best and F. A. Pitt (.>); vuuners-up, 11. Cathy and A. ilclvee (s). • Champion Pairs: G. 11. Clutten and W. S. Ati:>;us (*). The runuersriip was not (k-::h!cii. h was between F. Graham and \Y. Moves (r) and l'\ A. Maitai won the wholo cif iho Leaper Shield games, scoring Hr1 against Nelson's 419. The Select Kits ('f?Mu:ni;.ee report considerable difficulty in providing many games for ~i t"(k v clvb1.- phiyors, owing to the limited .'I iiiini^cr i-iMiuinxl and the large number "| in .scl'.:■•'•(: i'roin. There was a surplus of ■ From 30 io 10 p'.-tyers after every game, .^ i Owing io tin1 number of Saturdays 1 -inkcii ins in [he matches", which interj iVrc with the cUib feathers, if the latv t. r ;nv iv fit:l continued the committee refonuneiii! riiai three matches be played r.i'xt. season, instead of six. Also - for oiK-h "'.iinpoiition it is recommended j tlurt t'ii'ii' i>u six rinks. Field Trophy.—Thanks to- the president, Mr. T. A.' 11. Field, the Wednesujday players of the Nelson and Maitai "i'lubs have a valuable cup to play for. 1 Or the competitions played Nelson won 4 and Maitai 2. , 1 Saunders ~ Cup and Wakefield Fea- ■ iiPTs. —Tijiee rinks journeyed to ' I Tak.'ika uitli a view of wresting these \\ ii'ophics from the holders. Play in the ' : iil'Lcrnoon was stopped by rain, so that 1 tii;' Saundera cup remains with the • j hi'ldorl.;. However, in the morning the 'j following rink was. successful in cap'ituring t'io Wakefield Feathers: A. C. 'jMuure, H. 0. Jaoka, W. Moyes, T. '! Haldane (s). These players are still in ' possession of the- feathers. 1 Mr. D. Watt.—-Tho departure of Mr. i). Watt., who has been treasurer for four years, has left a blank in the . dub's officials difficult to fill. Mr Watt has devoted much time and interest to the- club's vveli'are } and he left for his j new sphere of labour (Wellington) carrying the best wishes of every raemt ber. A memento was given prior to his : departure. Tournaments. —In addition to the . Easter tournament the second Centr? i tournament was bold at New Yeai% for which the clul: entered ten full rinks ? and 18 pairs. T. A. H. Field and Mci Kee (s) succeeded in winning the pair 1 competition. The Easter tournament was more than usually successful, th& city gresiis being overtaxed at times. Quite a number of new teams took part and the popularity of the tournament was beyond question. [ Afternoon teas.—The thanks of the i club are duo to the wives of the president and vice-president for providing ' afternoon tea on special occasions. For 1 ordinary Saturdays tho ticket system L was used with partial success. Mr. A. 'C. Moore, who undertook^ this duty. j worked hard with the assistance of 1 several ladies to cater for members. 1 Substitutes.—This ever recurring trouble was again in evidence during ' tho season, and there were occasions ' when both skips playing against one another were substitutes. The trouble 5 might be overcome to some extent if ■ each skip were to appoint a member of > his team to watch the dates of play and see to the attendance of the rink. ( The Selection Committee was frequcnt•ly hampered on Saturday afternoons •by so many substitutes being required i after ordinary match teams had been : selected. ■ Two feet on the ,mat. —In conjuncI tion with all other clubs in the Dominion, the members ai-e invited to i express an opinion on this matter, viz., , whether the new rule regarding two feet at the mat should be retained or the old rule reverted to. The committee recommend the old rule, i Obituary.—Dcnth again divided tho club from three vesnectod members viz., Mr. Martin l.icrhtband, Mr. E. S. Coster, am! Mr H. Trent. Tho first-

named was one of tlio founders of the club. . ' ; Red Cross Day.—The members quickly responded to an invitation by the lied Cross Committee to hold an afternoon in aid of the fund on Saturday, April 24th. There was a' splendid attendance and £24 2s. was added to th«* fund. The 12th Regiment Band kindly, played selections. Miscellaneous. —It has been, decided to place a gas stove in the club's meeting house. We, are- indebted to Mr. E. J. Allen for having presented to the club his two £2 debentures . Mr. Alf. Leaper, of the firm of Leapor Bros., has kindly presented a set of scoring boards jot use next season. Thanks are again due to the Press for the encouragement givon to the game by their full reports, and the publication of teams. The committee desire to thank the Maitai Club for generously placing their green at the disposal of members after our green had been closed. The-War.—While deploring the present war, your committee recognise the necessity of every member of the club accepting a certain amount of respon T sibility in bringing the great struggle to a successful issue. This can be done by collective and individual financial assistance, by helping to interest those able to take an active part in the burden to shoulder arms for their King and country, by the encouragement of recruiting, and at all times showing unremitting enthusiasm and patriotism until England and her Allies have subdued and conquered an enemy of the blackest and foulest type. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £3'3s lOd. ~ In-moving the adoption of the repi,»fc and balance-sheet, Mr Field said he thought, the clu!b had had a very successful season. He thanked Mr A. J. Redgrave, the vice-president, for taking his place on occasions on which his (Mr Field's) public duties had prevented him from being present on the green. Tho motion was seconded by Mr A. E. Mansford, and carried. The senior and -junior championship trophies and the Lyell Cup were presented to the winners, amid applause. A vote of thanks was tendered to Dr. Boor for tho presentation to the club, through the Rev. J.. P. Kempthorne, of an old r.topl engraving of an English village bowling .-.cene, and one to Mr E. J. Allen for the cancellation of his do^ ben tv res. The 'election of officers resulted as follows:-—President, Mr A. J. Redgrave ; vice-president, Mr Alfred Gould; hon. secretary, Mr R. W. Stiles (rc-| elected); hon. treasurer. Mr G. J. Robertson; general committee, Messrs T. Haldane, H. Baigent, R. W. Monson, G. Hogg, A. C. "Moore, H. C. Jacka, and E. S. Cresswell; selection committee-, Messrs T. Haldane, A. C. Moore, and R. W. Monson; new players' instruction committee, Messrs A. E. Mansford, T. Haldane, A. C. Moore, H. O. Jacka, .and A. G. Best-1; auditors, Messrs W. Moyos and G. H. Clutten (re-elected). Two new members were elected.

Notices of motion by the retiring Match Committee concerning the rules governing club competitions were considered. In connection with the senior and junior championships, it was resolved, "That tin* Match Committee shall have power to provido for an alternative system of play whereby all entrants' shall be drawn into pairs, the principle of play- being the host two out of three games; winners to be redrawn until the champion is found; no handicaps: 21 heads." An amendment to strike out the VicePresideivU* Pairs was lost on the voices. A motion by tho Match Committee to make the Vice-President's Pairs nonsectiional, players to retire after one defeat, as in tho President's Pairs, was defeated on a show of hands. It was resolved, "That in all competitions games shall be played to such a stage that the player or players having ihe least score cannot win by playing the remaining heads," In connection with the Pennant and Leaper Shield competitions, it »'as resolved, as-a recommendation to trie Maitai Bowling Club, that, three matches 'beplayed next season (instead of i-rix), and that there be six rinks for each competition. It was resolved, "That this meeting considers it< advisable to revert to the old rule of one foot on the mat instead of two as at present." With reference to substitutes, Mr G. A. Harkness moved as a notice of motion that not more than two substitutes be permitted in full rinks and one in uairs. Newly elected officers returned thanks for their election, and, various speakers spoke in. warm terms of praise of Mr Stiles's work as secretary. Votes of thanks were accorded to the ladies and Mr A. C. Moore for attending to afternoon teas, to the Press, to those who had given debentures to the club, to the auditors, to the Ground Committee, and to Messrs D. Watt and A. Crawford for Easter tournament services . . It was resolved to accord a special vote of thanks to Mr. D. Watt, formerly treasurer, for services rendered, and to congratulate him on his promotion.
