Sir,—lt is to be hoped that the City Council will decide to go ahead with the acquisition oi: the Maitai lands without troubling the citizens with a quite unnecessary poll. The -Government evidently did not consider a poll necessary for such a comparatively small matter, since they merely suggested that further action should be postponed till after the municipal elections. The elections have since been held, and the citizens of Nelson have expressed their opinion in the .matter with sufficient plainness by electing a majority of candidates who had stated that they were in favour of continuing the proceedings for the acquisition of Denne's Hole and a recreation ground. That is a much clearer mandate than the Council receives for most of Mie works it undertakes. No time should bo lost in securing the liberal Government subsidy which is afc present offered.
