INSTANCES OF RUSSIAN HEROISM (Rccei/ed June 15, 0.55 a.m.) petrograd, June 14. Many incidents of heroism were connected with the first use" of gas on the Eastern front. The Russians were oriiererl to remain, quiet in the trenches until the' Germans, expecting to find the Russians stifled, crept up to the entanglements. Numbers of Russians fell asphyxiated after intense suffering. When the enemy appeared behind tlic death clone 1, our rifles swept away the first ranks, and the remainder retreated. Our ' machine guns w-oto workec with a soldier holding a wet -bandage over the gunner's face until both diec together. The first. Russian trenches were prac tically filled with asphyxiated men but reserves came tip and avenged then with the bayonet. Many of. the Germans came withi) their own gas zone, and their shriek in the throes of the poison were horribl to hear.
