PLOT TO BLOCK THE WATERWAY

In connection with, a cable received on Thursday stating that the British steamer Den Ewnie collided- with and sank the Italian steamer Kruiten'in the middle of the Suez Canal, significance is added to the incident by a summary published upon Ministerial authority of correspondence leading to the rupture of relations with Turkey.-

The correspondence disclosed a. plot to block the waterway which was discovered by Lieutenant Mors, in the employ cf the Alexandria city police, on his return from Constantinople in 1914.

Lieutenant Mors informed the Egyptian Ministry that Owar Fauzi Bey, a Turkish staff officer, discussed with him plans for blocking the Canal. Fanzi Bey said a wealthy Turk had presented the Government with a steamer carrying the Italian flag and commanded by an ex-officer of the Turkish Navy. She was to take a cargo cf cement from an Italian port, and the manifest would be made out for Massoweh.

The captain was to Submit to search by a British warship without demur, and on reaching tho Canal was to sink his vessel, either by colliding with a British ship or by provoking a British warship to sink her, or sink her himself.

Favtzi Bey stated that a trustworthy Egyptian officer was leaving for Egypt to participate in the scheme and instruct agents.

Lieutenant Mors afterwards spoke to Dr. Pruefer about tho scheme. The latter did not seem to approve of it, but gave him plaiw of the Canal. Mors mot Fauzi Bey as the latter was about to board the steamer, but only greeted
