Rome reports that the Italian vanguard having crossed the Isonzo "river, makes the Austrian tenure of Goritza (or Gorz) uncertain.

The successful operations in the Trentino are equally important, and indicate that Italy has nearly closed the wide open gate giving access to her northern plains.

It is increasingly evident that the Austrians have not made adequate preparations for Italy's entry into the war, and that the threats of a lightning German advance, which Gorman agents widely circulated in Italy, were empty bluff.

No doubt'ltaly will be shortly heavily engaged. Meantime her strategical position and the morale of her troops have been greatly strengthened.

A Rome message states that the Emperor Francis Joseph is exasperated at the sudden and unexpected Italian offensive, and is recalling General yon Hoetzendorf from, the • supreme command.

There is a reign of terror in the Trentino. The Austrians are ruthlessly destroying property and arresting the inhabitants. Starved refugees are arriving at Verona in a pitiful condition.

xl great number of Germans and Austrians have been arrested in Italy on charges cf espionage. Austrian persons at the Embassy and the Vatican had been openly spying, believing themselves to be protected by diplomatic- immunity.
