Evidence before the Wages Board disclosed that ilio'restrictions placed on the export of Newcastle coal was severely affecting the trade. .Some pits i'were closed, and the rest were averagi ing Kttle more than half-time. Japan had secui'ed the United States Government contract for the Philippine Islomls and the Java railways -contract, both previously hold by Newcastle; wJiilo the Ciiilian railways were now cb-t-aisiing s'jpplies from their own mines. Another cause of sickness Mas the shortage of oxpJojiives. The Collimy Mechanics' Wages Roard has decided that the state of the industry did not warrant, incrcaiscs.
