DESPERATE STRUGGLE IN A PASS

(Received Jane 11, 8.5 p.m.) Rome, June 11. The Italians are within seventeen miles'of Trieste.

Details of the capture of the Priekofel Pass show that the Austrians made a desperate'resistance, for three days. They repeatedly rallied and flung themselves on the small Italian force holding the Pass.

The artillery was unable to intervene, and left the struggle to- the men with bayonets and clubbed rifles. The fighting was shut in by towering rocks.

At a critical moment three fresh Austrian regiments were thrown against the sadly decimated Italian front. The officers ordered the Alpini to die rather than yield an inch.

A charge drove the Alpini down the pass, bnti reforming, they brought the Austrian rush to a standstill.

Steadily feeding the line and entrenching, the Italians made their position secure until the Austrians refused to again face the steel. Then the Alpini assumed the offensive and converted the repulse into a rout. The "Vossiche Zeitung" announces a wireless telegraph report that antiaircraft guns have been pla^ed^on the cathedral at Milan, and St. Mark's, Venice. This will justify aerial attacks. The Italian authorities say the statement is false, its evident object being to prepare public opinion for outrages j similar to those at Rheims and Louvain. A C4erman aeroplane flying towards Turkey over Bulgaria took fire, and the airman was incinerated. Illegitimate flights across Bulgaria for the purpose of reinforcing the Turkish air fleet have been proceeding for two months. Several machines have fallen and have been sequestrated.
