HARMONIC SOCIETY CONCERT.
A highly successful performance ot .Cowen's "Sleeping Beauty" in the School of Music last evening inaugurated this year's series of concerts" by the Nelson Harmonic Society. This is a popular work, and contains some pleasing numbers, notabJy the clioruses "At Dawn of-Da'y" and '"Sleep." The, solo parts were taken by Mrs Hanrou {Princess), Mrs Harold " Moore- (the Wicked Fay), Mr E. Richards (Prince), and Mr H. Itidson (the King), who all sang in their best style, and were .nuoii appreciated; .For tho opening item t!se orchestra played an arrangement of Mendelssohn's overture to "Midsummer Night's Dream," for string inslnuments, together with the-' piano (Mis>s Judson and Mr Waters) and organ (Mr N. R. Williams). Tlie next number was Handel's "Umbra mai Fu,"' in which Mrs Moore took the solo part with an accompaniment of strings and organ ? followed by a free paraphrase of the air for chorus, strings, and organ. The "Sleeping Beauty" was performed in its entirety, and the concert was bnnight'to a close" by tho singing oi the National Anthem. Mr Julius Lemmer, who had a good reception, wielded the baton with his accustomed -skill, Miss Judson acted as pianist, Mr Willraris as organist and Miss Fairhall as principal violinist. As: a., result: of, tho r.meert the sum of £11 14s 6d will be handed to- the Hospital Ship Fund.
