MELLISH'S COMET.
Mellish's Oomot, which was first seen at the Atkinson Observatory on May. 119 th, has increased greatly ip brightness during the past fortnight, ami is now easily visible to tl:<> naked eye. I Its magnitude is now sibou! 3|. To {the unaided oyo it .'ipw'ju's as a hazy patch not far from the bright star Alpha Pavonis, ar.d by careful gazuig a short faint tail can bo detected. In a good pair of fleld glasses tho tail is very distinct, and can bo traced for fsoirie distance. As seen m the' 5-mch i telescope the heart h about lomm.ot |arc in diameter, :md ir.crea^es m brightness to a distinct stellar nucleus. iOrTa dark sky tho tail extends for at i jf-a^t three degrees, a distance equal to i ß j\- times the apwireut Hicmoter of .the moon Tlie oomot's position last nignfc was approximately right ascension 2Ohr loOrnin declination GOdeg 2oimn south, ■ hvt it is moving v.'inidJy south and east, 1 ir.d f>v to-night will have moved threo 'or four degrees. Tho comet becomes ! visible soon after dark, and remains I visible all night.'
