Mr L. Eiair, son of Mr J. Hair, of Nelson, w.ho is on the Bank of New Zealand staff, at Manaia, ha.s volunteered for active "service.

Captain A. H. Burn (formerly qronp officer at Nelson) has been appointed adjutant; (on probation) of the 2nd battalion of the Trentham Regiment.

Rev T. A. Williams, formerly of tho Baptist Church, Thames, and latterly at Oamaru, has been accepted for service with the Expeditionary Forces, and leaves Now Zealand with the next reinforcement draft.

An official intimation was received [yesterday that Corporal Keble Reginald Bowden, of the Wellington Battalion, had been killed in action at the Dardanelles. He was previously reported as wounded. The deceased was the only child of Mr W. E. Bowden, .of Buxton and Co.'s staff.- The Defence authorities have extended their deepest sympathy to Mr and Mrs Bowden,; who will also have the condolences of the community in their bereavement. Corporal Bowden, who was a young man, belonged to the Post and Telegraph Department, and enlisted from the Taranaki district.

Mrs Owen, of Nelson, has received a telegram stating that Private H. H. Owen, who was wounded at the Dardanelles, is progressing favourably.

Private advice has been received in Christchurch that Major G. F. Button, commanding the 10th (Nelson) Squadron of the Canterbury Mounted Kitle Regimont, has. been slightly wounded. —Press Association.

A Sydney Press Association cable states that Private S. Coleman, failed at the Dardanelles, was born in YYellington. His parents are now resident at Pyrraont.

Sir James Fairfax has been appointed president of the National Art Gallery, says a Sydney Press Association message.
