Five airmen who escaped from Przemysl state that the hospitals were crowded during the last few weeks Nearly half the garrison was sick owing to privations. Two tins of food were distributed at each sortie. In many cases the exhausted stomachs were unable to digest the food, and some died. Except horseflesh, the only meat remaining wais carrier pigeons, which were offered to General Kusmanek, who refused and sent the pigeons to the hospital. The Austrians blew- up forts, batteries, magazines, and bridges. Aviators hovered above watching the destruction and then fled off to Cracow.
