ARRESTED AFTER THREE YEARS.

A man named J. Alexander Smith, alias William Vance, who has been wanted by the police for three years, was arrested by Plain-clothes. Constable Wade at Wakefield yesterday, and in the afternoon was charged before Mr. J. S. Evans, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court, with on February 6th, 1912, at Palmerston North, while-an undischarged bankrupt, forging a promissory note for £142 and uttering the same to George J. Scott, the' Deputy Official Assignee.

On the application of Sergt. Barrett the accused was remanded to appear at Palmerston North next week.

It is alleged that there are a number of other charges pending against the accused,- who has a number of aliases. Credit for the arrest is due to Constable Berthelson, who ascertained that a man answering the accused's description was in town. After an interview with the accused, further inquiries were made, the accused in the meantime leaving for Korere. Tho police ascertained that he had left Korere, and he was arrested on the train at Wakefield by Constable Wado yesterday while returning to Nelson.
