EXAGGERATED
MESSAGE FROM GENERAL BIRD-
WOOD.
(Received March 19, 9.35 p.m.)
Fremantte, March 19
Archdeacon Samwell, Anglican chaplain to the Second Expeditionary Force in. Egypt, has returned. He declared that the reported breaches of discipline were grossly exaggerated. The conditions are greatly improved, and the men are now fully aware -of the consequences of indiscretions. Th© whole trouble was due to criminal adulteration of liquor by Egyptian cafe proprietors.
Archdeacon Samwell brings a message from General Sir William Birdwood, stating that he is intensely pleased with the progress^ and'efficiency attained by the Australian and New Zealand troops. The men are eager and willing and have risen to the occasion.
When the Archdeacon left the men were itching with excitement—(a deletion by the censor follows).
