Gisborne, March 18

At the Supreme Courti this morning, the hearing of the civil action, Dr William Patrick McEdowney, of Portsmouth (England), v. Mrs. W. J. Buttimore, Gisborne, a claim for £6000 damages for alleged slander, was begun. The statement of claim alleges that defendant, a niece of one James Gibson, deceased, spoke defamatory woras concerning the plaintiff (nephew oi t-he deceased), alleging that he was given to drink, and that as a consequence, Gibson's will was altered, and a clause devising land valued at £6000 to the plaintiff revoked, no provision being made for him- , . ~ ■. ■ The evidence in support of the plaintiff's claim was taken in England.
