THE LATE BISHOP CRIMES.
PROPOSED INTERMENT IN
CATHEDRAL
GOVERNMENT CANNOT. GRANT
PERMISSION
(Special to "The ColoniBt.")
ChriStOhurch, March 18. A situation unique in the history of New Zealand has arisen with regard to i the proposal that the body of t.ho late Bishop Grimes should be buried in the Catholic Cathedral, Barbadbes street. [The Minister of Internal Affairs has ! been asked for permission to inter the body of the late Bishop in the Cathedral but tie reply received is to the effect that the Minister has no power to grant such permission. The Cathedral was built mainly as the result of Bishop Grimes's efforts, for he made its erection his life's work. It would, it is considered, be only Sitting for his ashes to repose within its walls, for there could not be a finer monument to the departed Bishop than the magnificent Cathedral in Barbadoes street., The refusal of the Department of Internal Affairs to grant permission for the interment* within the Cathedral has caused a good deal of surprise in the Catholic community. In euch a case it is, of course, natural to look to precedent. The clergy and laity most directly interested find it hard to understand the attitude of the Minister, in view of the fact that the body of the late Bishop If mhan was buried in St. Patrick's Cathedral. Auckland, about four years ago. There was then no difficulty about the matter, and the-grave of the deceased prelate, with it« beautiful brass tablet let into th© floor, is there for every worshipper to see. So far as can be ascertained, however, this is the only instance of buri.nl inside a house of worship in the Dominion.
