NELSON LICENSING CQMMITTEE.

QUARTERLY MEETING.

The quarterly meeting of the Nelson Licensing' Committee was held yesterday. Present: Messrs J. S. Evans, S.M. (chairman), H. Atmore, W. N. Franklyn, T. Pettit, and E. E. Trask. The returning officer notified that No-license was not carrod at the recent poll. The police report on licensed houses was favourable. Applications for permanent transfers >vere approved as follows: —J. Thomavflti to J- D. Moriarty, Provincial Hotel (Mr. J. P. Hayes for applicant); C. H. Satherley to E. J. Knopiman, Pelorus Hotel (Mr. Moore for applicant); H Baigent to J. P. Beirne, Masonic Hotel (Mr. Cheek for applicant). Mary C. Kerr, widow of the late John Kerr, licensee of the Turf Hotel, Stoke, was granted permission to carry on the license. Mr. Cheek appeared for applicant. It being the l.i-jb meeting of the old committee, the chairman thanked members for the assistance they had given him during their term of office. It had been, he said, v most satisfactory committee. He noticed that Mr Atmore was not s'taHdine; :>;iain. Mr Atmore had done a good l-.ativ years' service on the committee, and he moved that he be accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his past services. The motion was seconded by Mr. Pettit and earned unanimously. In thanking the committee for their vote of thanks, Mr. Atmore said that he had served for 12 years on the committee, and he thought that it was time he had a rest. He believed there were plenty of men capable and willing to fill the position, _ and they should have a chance to do it, ... Mr. Franklyn spoke in eulogistic terms of the manner in which Mr. Evans had carried out the duties of chairman, and moved that a motion of thanks and appreciation of his services be recorded on th» minutes. This was sneondod by Mr. Best and carried unanimously. The chairman i'ianked the committee for their resolution. In the order of things it was his duty to act as chairman whether the committee ap-m-pcifited his actions or otherwise, therefore it was gratifying to^iim to boar their remarks about his administration.
