MEDITERRANEAN INTERESTS
PREJUDICED BY NEUTRALITY

The "Messagero" says the Alfie.B have planned a military expedition to take Constantinople, and asks, "Does the arrangement exclude Italy entirely or almost- entirely from the partition of Turkey, which will be the basis of th< arrangement in the eastern Mediterranean ? This would be a grave misfortune for . Italy, whose policy lacks th< promptness necessary for great achieve ments.' 5
The "Corriere d'ltalia" advises war at any cost. It remarks that the mobilisation is intended for the defence of Italian interests against Austria's attempts to prevent Italy maintaining the position to which she is entitled in the surrounding seas.
"L'Avante," the Italian Socialist organ, declares that Austria is prepared to cede the Trentino and Trieste hinterland to Italy in return for a continuance of her neutrality.
M. Maeterlinck, who is missioning in Italy, announces that the Belgians wiil henceforth have the fullest sympathy of the Italians.
