Cable advice has been received at Christehurch that Lieutenant G. W. Chapman, of the 3rd Dragoon Guards, was killed in action in France. Lieutenant Chapman (says a Press Association message) was a Christ's College boy.

The Presbyterian General Assembly elected the Rev. W. Scorgie, of Mornington, to be Moderator next year.

Lieutenant J. S. G. Reid, R.N., formerly an officer in the Union. Company's service, has joined the Royal Navy, and is lieutenant on H.M.S. Roxburgh, 10,800 tons.

Mr A. E. Rowden, of the Agricultural Department, has been promoted to the position of inspector of offices, and will return from Christchurch and take up his residence in Wellington after the New Year.

A. Smyth.

Richards, formerly headmaster of St Mary's old school, Nelson, will regret to learn that a severe illness hius necessitated his entering a private hospital m Masterton. Despite his'advanced years Mr Richards has retained his health and activity in a remarkable degree, up to the present, and his early convalescence will bo learned of with pleasure by a very wide c'irclt;.
