This is always an interesting section, and" the competition in the various ring .■eyeatft. was keen. As usual, consider-' interest was Evinced in the jumping eyonts, and the men's hunting competition was again won by Mr P. 0. Batchelor's Sahdridge, in a largo field of competitors. Tho winner has a unique record, and one that will be hard to beat, having competed on thirteen successive occasions at Nelson, securing eleven first awards and being placed second twice. taken on tho whole, was not tip to the usual standard, but the Jadies' jumping was excellent, Miss Berrymaa, on.Mrs Noel Adams's Saladin, gaining first prize, while Miss Mabel Trask rode the second and third horses. The boys' jumping ovonts attracted a good entry, and tho efforts of some of tJio youthful ridtira to get their mounts over the hurdles caused much amusement. A new class for maiden huntors was included in tho schedule this year, and attracted eight entries, Messrs Newman Bros.' Brown, ridden by Mr T. Newman, proving the winner. The exhibition of jumping, however, was not of a high order. Competition in the harness horses was keen, and the judge (Mr C. C: Robert) was very favourably impressed with the entries m the gig class, the placed horses, owned respectively by.Mrs li., N. Richardson, Mr H. Hunt, and Miss F. A. Richmond, being especially well spoken of. Tne lady's hack class attracted a large entry, 'and'the judge remarked that they were "a very nice lot indeed.'' Mr G. W. New's Moirette gained first award in a keenly contested class.

Miss Goodwin was adjudged the best lady rider, taking Mrs P. 0. Andrew's special prize, and Miss Shirlev Blackett was given second place, taking Mr Squires'® prize. Mr S. Berryman's weight-carrying hack, The Colonel, was adjudyt-d the champion hack, and* Messrs Newman Bros.' Sally Waters gained this distinction among the harness hcrses. There was .-some'■remark-■upon".--the fact that-.though the schedule stipulated that riders in the troop horse class should be 'in full uniform, only two were so attired, and the rider of the winning horse was in mufti. Lieutenant-Adjutant Macmahon informed the officers in charge of the competition that uniforms had been called in, and it was impossible for all the competitors to comply with the stipulation, which in the circumstances was not enforced.
