THE WAKAPUAKA ROAD.

PROPERTY OWNERS AFFECTED

DEPUTATION TO THE COUNTY

COUNCIL.

A deputation, consisting of Messrs. O'Beirne, Barnett . and Frost, waited upon the Waimea County Council yesterday in regard to the improvements to the Wakapuaka road which the Council intended carrying out. Mr. O'Beirne said that while residents were thoroughly in sympathy with the proposal to widen the road, they felt that it would press hard on certain individuals, and the deputation came with suggestions to relieve the hardships if possible. If the points were taken off and the bends filled in, the road would be straightened, with< out injury being done to property owners. There was little enemgh flat land in the district without more being taken for widening the road.

The chairman pointed out that the Council did not propose to take anj;thing that did not belong to them. ■ Mr. O'Beirne said that the road was taken from high water mark fifty years ago, and high water mark to-day was different from what it was then. If the road line marked out by the County Engineer was carried out, property owners would be seriously affected. He suggested that councillors should be asked to visit Wakapuaka to meet the deputation on the ground. -.■

On Cr. Macmahon's motion, seconded by Cr. Hoult, it was resolved that representatives of the Council meet settlers of Wakapuaka on the matter.
