WORK FOR BRICKLAYERS.

Clsborne, Oct. 7. The earthquake at 6.45 this morning was the severest felt in Gisborne for 18 v*ears, but was of a steady nature, and beyond stopping the town clock and such minor accidents caused little damage. In country districts, however, the damage was very severe. At Tokomaru .Bay the local bricklayer lias already received orders to build no fewer than 55. new chimneys to replace those which fell down during the quake; and several business premises are badly damaged, notably the_ Farmers' Cooperative store, where it will take £700 to again make things shipshape, and J. J>: Kelly and Co.'s building, the whole of the windows of which wero torn out. Plato glass windows-were, smashed all ovp-r the township, and alarming fissures appeared in the roads, while there were at least two huge landslides which brought down thousands of tons of earth.

It is the same in all country districts. Hotel bars suffered heavily with bro-ken-bottles, the contents of shelves being thrown on to the floors.

The quake lasted from two to four minutes, according to locality, and its direction was north-east- to south-vv«sv..

There were other smaller shakes up tho coast throughout the d°ay.
