Dunedin, July 1. The dispute in which the Dunedin branch of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers is concerned was before the Council to-day. A deadlock occurred over the first clause of the demands making a week of 44 instead of 47 hours. The employers said they wore not disposed to concede anything in regard to any of the principal clauses, '■because to do so would prejudice the -employers in other centres, where a dispute bad also arisen. It would.be better, they suggested, to refer the dispute bodily to the Arbitration Court in the hope of securing a Dominion award. "The Union delegates reluctantly consented to this, and Mr Triggs formally agreed to tho course proposed.
