. The maid had listened to some anticonscription observations from the guests at dinner without moving a muscle of her face. Afterwards, says the "Manchester Guardian," her mistress, who knew that the maid was engaged to a soldier, thought it tactful to explain that the arguments were directed against compulsory service only, and not the army. "I don't think they know much about it, ma'am," replied the maid. - "Lord Roberts is only saying what my young man told me years ago."
