MEETING OF THE EXECUTIVE.

(From ."TB© Colonist;'* Feb. 26.)

The,executive committee of the Nelson Advancement Society met on Tuesday evening in the City Council. Chambers. There were present: Messrs H. R. Duncan, G. M. Rout, F. W. Fairey, W. Dee, C. Milner, W. W : . Snodgraßs, J. Houlker; H. M. Field, and It G. Lucas. Mr G. M. Rout was voted to the chair.

Mr A. B. Hurst was appointed secretary pro. tern, on the motion of Mr Lucas, seconded by Mr Milner. A general discussion ensued on the work the society was to undertake. The chairman, in speaking of how enthusiasm in new movements in Nelson generally died away after a time, attributed this to the fact that too many elderly men were placed in Reading offices. It was a healthy sign to see so many young and energetic members of the Advancement Society, which would no doubt brine success to its efforts. Mr Houlker said that the first thing to be done was to decide upon the most necessary work t6 be undertaken, and then to diligently carry it out. Every encouragement should be given to. the Beautifying Society, and the Chamber of Commerce.

Mr Duncan obscirved that much dolpended on the funds at the disposal of the society. ;;Lack of ways and means was generally responsible for movements languishing. Mr Fairey also held that tho young blood in the society would prove a great asset. Mr Milner moved, and Mi Duncan seconded that a "Nelscn Saturday" bo observed, subject to the approval of the provisional committee, for the purpose of securing subscriptions, and that tho ladies of the city be asked to assist.

After considerable discussion supporting the motion it was carried. A general discussion, followed on the best course to adopt in the way of securing definite substantial subscriptions to the society. Members felc that those people likely to benefit irost by the operations of the society should be waited upon first, and urged to contribute liberally to the society's support. Then efforts would be mude to get in touch with the general residents. It was felt by the committee that after the business people had done their share that others who had the welfare of the city and district, at heart would do their part in enabling the society to undertake definite work for the good of Nelson. Th© necessary arrangements were made, and Mr G. M. Rout was appointed to act as treasurer. It was decided that the society should undertake the supplying of envelopes— bearing an invitation to "come to Nelson," and the sunshine record —to the public and thfe business firms. The meeting decided that a deputation wait on the City Council and the Waimea County Council, and aek for a subsidy, confidence being expressed by the members that the councillors would meet the request patriotically and liberally. It was decided on the motion of Mr Houlker, to write to the Union Company asking what guarantee it would require to run an excursion steamer from Wellington once a month, leaving the former port at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and Nelson on the return trip at 8 p.m. on Sunday.
