THE COMPROMISE PROPOSALS.

STATEMENT BY MR. ASQUITH.

THE DETAILS WITHHELD.

London, March 16. Mr. Asquith, speaking in the House of Commons, said that if the Government's proposals for a compromise on the Home Rule, question were rejected it would be a waste of time to formu : late details for discussion. He was not prepared to put a cut and dried scheme on paper, as he wished to keep the discussion to'the main issue. If it was accepted, the Bill would require administrative and financial adjustments. Tho Lord Lieutenant would have no jurisdiction in the excluded area. The Government were not much encouraged by the reception of the proposals.

Replying to Mr. Bcoqtar Law, Mr Aequith promised &n opportunity to discuss the proposals at the earliest date.

Sir Edward Carson interjected a remark that the course the Government was now taking showed that the proposals wore a hypocritical sham.
