INCREASE IN PAY.

STATEMENT BY MR HERDMAN

Wellington, March 17. The new scale of police pay has been issued fey the Hon. A. L. Herdman, who says:— lilt has been found that the high rates of pay earned in outside occupations make it difficult to obtain the services of first-class men for the police force. The force is a good one, but can be improved, and tlio ncv conditions of employment should tempt .^ood men to join, and it is with the hope that young Now Zoalandr-rb, who nre. not afraid of steady, hard work, and who are prepared to submit themselves to strict discipline, will offer their services, that the scale of pay has been improved. The State is prepared to <uvo good pay for good service. " "The rank of superintendents in Auckland and Wellington, under the new scale, is per year £460 to £520, with increments of £10; superintendents at Christehuroh and Dunedin, £460 to £490 increments £10 every two years; inspectors,, £380 to £*», £10 'Per annum • sub-inspectors, £330 to L6W, £10 every two years; senior-sergeants, 34s 6d to 16s per day, increments bd nor day every two years; sergeants, 12s oo 13s 6d, 6d per day every two veara; constables, under three years service 9s, three to six years' service 9s 6(i. six to nine years' service 10s, nine to fourteen years' sernce 10s 6d, fourteen to twenty years' sen ice lls; chief detectives, 16s 6d to 1/s 6d increment of 6d every + two years ; detec-tive-sergeants; 15s *l% ?*,£%? two ; detectives, Us 6d to 14s 6d, Is pei day every three years: probationary constables, 7s. It should be remembered that m calculating the v/eeklv wages nf those ranks where the rate is at per day, police officers are paid'seven days every week.
