A DERBY WINNER.

llt was reported some time-ago that Mr. J.B. Joel had.sold- Siinstar for 80,000gns. When questioned on the I subject ,Mr Joel said:—Well, it is the first I. have heard of it, and had there been any truth in it at all surely I. would have been the. first person approached, as .the horse is my property. Eighty thousand guineas, eh! How absurd. If I ,hr.d been inclined to sell him —which I. am not—the sum mentioned would not represent his value in my eyes. Just consider.. He began by winning - the Two -Thousand Guineas in ea^y style from Steadfast -.and his stable companion Lycaon, and a fortnight later followed this tip by taking the Newmarket Stakes, His only other race was the Derby, in which he confirmed his previous defeat of Steadfast, winning again by two lengths from Lord Derby's.horse. Moreover, he won under great difficulties, for some distance from home he hurt one of his legs, and it says much for his gameness that he was able to finish the course at all. This concluded his racing career, and at the end of the season he was retired to the stud.
