Earl Grey, speaking at a civic reception, said: "Unity of interest between the Dominions and the Motherland is what I desire to find and accentuate, for unity of interest, in my opinion, makes for national greatness and the expansion of British influence. It has done a great deal in the advancement of civilisation throughout, the world, and I have come here to see what contribution Australia is. making to the general scheme."
