PUBLIC MEETING AT HOKITIKA

Hokitika, Oct 10. At. a public meeting to-night, the Mayor "presidißg, matters pertaining to the forthcoming West Coast 3«bllee were discussed. It was reported that the general arrangements were advanced, and that the celebrations promised to be very successful. About £120 was subscribed in the room to establish a fund. This amount will be largely augmented, and with the i*overnment subsidy of £300 towards the general expenses,, and £200 for the memorial, the ultimate figure is expected to be a very!substantial one. "The varioussspealcers predicted that the event would ..mark an important epoch, in the-history of the West doast, as it would bring together pioneers of the district and others from all parts of the Dominion. the meeting passed a resolution unanimously endorsing the Mayor s action in regard to his representations to the member for the district the Prime Minister, -the of Railways, urging trat Hokitika be the terminus in connection with the .proposed alteration to the east and west coast railways connection. ■ The Mayor's declaration to the authorities that the new service would _be of little benefit to the people living south of Greymouth unless Hokitika. was fixed upon as the and terminal point, was cordially endorsed by the various speakers.
