New York, May 31.

Speaking at the dodication of a monument to the victims of the battloship Maine disaster, Mr Taft declared that possession of. the Philippines gave the United States an Asiatic status, and brought her close to China. It gave them a double interest in the Pacific, and they must accept this responsibility, iising it for the general good of tho world.
