(From "The Colonist," Feb. 13.) Tlie annual race meeting of the Nelson Trotting Club held; at Richmond Park yesterday may be described as one of the most successful yot held by the club. The weather was fine, but a strong sou'-we&ter spoiled what would have otherwise been ideal conditions. There was a large attendance of-. .the publyc, including visitors hrom Marlborough, West Ooa&t and the Bay districts, and trains from both ends of the line were' well patronised, ■ Ifae nelds were good in ali events, and there wore some interesting finishes. In most cases .the public fancies, came home, but m one- instance the locally owned. Major Election was allowed to rotum.luEi supporters a substantial dividend, lnere, were no protests of any kind and tho meeting passed off without a hitch, the linal e^ent being "started to the. tick of the advertised time, which enabled patrons to reach tho railway stationm; ample time for departing trams. The improvements, to the course were much appreciated. , These included the enlargement of the saddling paddock and the erection of a'bird cage, in which the horses w*to paraded before going out on- to the course. Patrons were thus enabled, to view the horses at close quarters without running any risks by inspection in the saddling paddock as has been the case in the past. A. new sight board has also been erected opposite tho judge's box. The biggest improvement was the new totalisator house, a commodious structure which should serve the requirements of the racing, clubs for many years to come. The improvement* were paid for by the Nelson Jockey Club and the Nelson Trotting Club which have secured a lease of the Park from the A. and P. Association, which provided the new fencing for the course. The totalizator was worked by Mr. H. D. James, of Greymouth, and a capable staff of assistants, and £3,447 was put through the machine as against £2209 last year, an increase of £1238. The Club's officials and Mr. J. Glen, the secretary, are to be complimented on the arrangements made.
