HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the abovenamed Board was held last night, there being present: Messrs. Baigent (chairman), Biggins, Franklyn, Lock, Bell, Hoi lit, He wet-son, Allan, Lowe, Field, and Mrs. Watson.

Accounts were passed for the Hospital amounting to £342 Iss 9d, and for charitable aid to £271 8s Gd.

It was resolved to advertise for a Sister for the Hospital staff at a salary of £70 per annum.

The question of erecting a verandah on the north side of the men's shelter.at the Annexe, was postponed till the next meeting in order to ascertain the probable cost.

The chairman said the Matron at the Hospital desired to have two months' holiday next year, instead of taking one month this year. It was resolved. to grant the request. The report from the Alexandra Home was satisfactory. It was _resolved to place a cupboard in tho dining room at the Home, also to put in a slide be tween the dining room and the kitchen. Mr. Hoult spoke of the splendid condition in which he found the Home. The .institution was a credit to Nelson.

Tho chairman said tho matter of placing cowls on the chimneys at the home ,had been overlooked, but would be attended to.

It was resolved to take charge of an illegitimate child, and to place three children belonging to a, separated married co-uplo in one of the homes. The Relieving Officer reported on his visit to five of the homes where the Board had placed children. The report was considered satisfactory.

In reply to a letter from the Southland Board, it was resolved to endorse the principle that the whole cost regarding defective children should be borne by the Government.

The agent of tho Public Trustee notified that the late Mr. Drummond had left £100 for the Alexandra Home, and £2o for the Hospital.

The chairman's action re charges on the estate of the late Mr. James Dall, of Collingwood, was approved. It was stated the estate would probably yield £100, which would be divided between the Hospital and St. Andrew's Orphanage. The matter of placing a family in the Board's cottage in Brook vstreet, was left in the hands of the chairman.

Relief to the amount of £1 per month was granted to a married woman at Takaka.

The Hospital charges in two cases were reduced to 5s per week each. Attention was drawn to aman having been put down on his admission ticket to the Hospital to pay 15s per week, when he was. it was asserted, well able to pay the full charges-. The chairman said such cases would not occur if applicants for tickets were sent to the member of the Board hailing from their part of the .district. _ In one case the balance due for Hospital charges was remitted. It was resolved to paint the doctor's house at the Hospital.. The Hospital return showed 74 patients on the list, 35 being received during the month of October, and 22 left., Of the latter, 9 were cured, 9 relieved, 2 unrelieved, and 2 died. The Board adjourned at 10.40 p.m.
