VOTES FOR WOMEN.

LABOUR AMENDMENT DEFEATED

Mr Philip Snowdon (Labour) moved an amendment to the Homo Rule Bill to tho effect that votes should be given to tho women of Ireland on the basis of tho local government register.

Mr Redmond urged that the matter should bo left to tho Irish Parliament.

Mr Bali'our and Mr Ramsay Mac Donald supported tho amendment.

Mr Asquith replied that there was no precedent for conferring tho franchise on women in connection with the granting of self-government to the Dominions, and ho rc-cchood Mr Red-

mond's opinion

Tho amendment was defeated fey 314 to 141.
