Following tho request of a number of citizens the Mayor, Mr. T. A. H. Field, has called a public meeting to be held in the City Council Chambers on Monday next, for the purpose of placing before the public the necessity for the loans proposed _ for swimming baths, and the acquisition of water works reserve.

A runaway occurred in Bridge street early yesterday morning, which c;uned considerable damage to I ho pcling fence- at the Queen's Gardens. ZVJ r. F. Sowman, milkman, of Brook street, was serving a customer, when the horse became1" restive and backed .across, the street onto the footpath near tho Gardens. Mr. Sowman attempted to stop tho horso by seizing the rein, hut the animal set off, throwing him on to the footpath. Tho wheels of tho trap caught tho fence and ripped a number of palings out in two places, and milk was spilled on the footpath for a considerable distance. After bolting akng Bridge street into Collingwood and Nile streets the runaway was eventually stopped near the Prince Albert Hotel.
