WAKEFIELD

Another death occurred in \\;nkefield on Monday morning, when Mr. Samuel Mercer Smith passed away. He was a young man, only 29 years of age on 7th of last June, and came here from Aukanvti, near Eketahuna in the AVairarapa, for his health, and lived -with his sister, Mrs. Fred. Durbridge, under the care of his mother, Mrs. J. Smith, of Waimea street, Nelson. He is the third son of tho lato Mr. Charles Smith, of London. He was a .young fellow of a cheerful, bright disposition, and a great favourite with his many friends. He bore his trying illness with truly Christian fortitude1. He will be laid to rest beside his brother in St. John's churchyard, Wakcfield, on Wednesday. Mrs. Smith, and Mr. and Mrs. Durbridge have the sympathy of the Wakefield residents in their bereavement.
The sad accident resulting in tho death of Dr James Hudson, of Tapa-
wera, cast a further gloom ovor our libtlo township.
The annual examination in connection with tho local school is to'take place on Wednesday, the 17th inst. Mrs. Wratt's new house in Tho Terrace is neariug completion, and adds one inoro to tho villa 3-esidences in this pretty district. Mr Harold Franklyn is also having a. nice house erected near tho Major's residence. What is wanted now is a suitable drainage system to improve the sanitation of tho lower part of the township. ' . ;
