Mr. Ernest Arthur Craig, secretary of Craig Ltd., coal merchants and carriers, .said the statement that outside persons could not get coal at a pit was incorrect. There were no euchsthing as a bond in Auckland or a coal dealers' association.' The» whole crux of tlie.matter was tho extravagant living of the working man. He thought the Dominion was nearing a very dangerous financial zone owing tp the reckless and high extravagance in New Zealand of living. • . Mr William Jno. Houldsworth said the price of boots had gone up very little considering the big advance, in raw materials. •
Mr Douglas Reid, a grocer and butcher said there was a combine among butchers to fix the prices and they wore under a- penalty to sell at certain prices. He was tho only free man.
