MERCHANT SERVICE GUILD

THE AWARD FILED.

[United Phess Association]

Wellington, June 28

Tho award of the Court of Arbitration in the Merchant Service Guild dispute (relating to masters and officers) was filed with the Clerk of Awards to-day. The award is based on the recommendations of the Conciliation Court. Mr.. Justice Sim, in a memorandum attached, said that tho parties in the cuse agreed on a settlement of the dispute, and the terms agreed to were embodied in the recommendations of tho Conciliation Council. The Union, after making this agreement through its duly authorised agent, attempted to repudiate it, and asked the Court to alter the terms of the agreement so as to make tho hours of work eight a day, instead of 56 a week. That, of course, the union cannot be allowed to do, ami the award embodies tho recommendation .of the Council, with some additions afterwards agreed on by the parties. Huddart. Parker and Co. have been retained as a party to the award, but it seems clear that the company will not he bound by the award co far as it relates to round voyages which begin atid end in Australian ports. Tho question as to whether, in regard to vny oil-ftr voyages in New Zealand waters, i the company will be bound, can be left to be determined when a case arises. . :
