THE TRIANGULAR CONTEST.

ESSEX V. AUSTRALIA.

London, June 27. The AustraHans have commenced A match against Essex; -

Matthews, Kelloway, Whitty and Oarkoek were omitted from.the Australians, and Reeves replaced Robinson in tbo Essex team.

The start was delayed 40 minutes, tho Australians attending the funeral oi; Mr Ernest Hume, selector to the New; South. Wales Cricket Association, who. died in London from pneumonia.

Douglas won the toss and batted. Thd wicket was one of the easiest.

Russelljand Douglas opened to Emery, and McLaren. There was a separation at 34, Russell being caught in the Slips.:

.Douglas and Perrin.had a lengthy, partnership, adding 160 runs. :"

Fifty was up in 50 minutes, and tho century in 105 minutes.

Douglas was careful and took jm> risks. He made numerous singles, and was barracked. He gave chances when' 16 and 18. He was'so for 165 minutes" batting, Perrin reached his century iii 135 minutes. He was magnificent all round, and was not troubled by the bowling. His innings was chanceless, and he hit ten fours.

Douglas and Fano made another fin© stand, Fane cutting and driving well. He reached 53 in 85 minutes. He gavo a chance when 49.

The attendance was 3000. Stumps were drawn. The scores were as follows:—
