WAKEFIELD

The Harmonio Society were favoured with fine weather on Tuesday evening, which accounted for the largo number of* mornbers (52) present. All were pleased to Avelcome several new members from a. distance. Ther was a good practice, and a fair." start was made. The piece now being put into practice is the popular cantata "Phyllis," or "The- Farmer's/Daughter," by George F. Root. It is similar to the last cantata,' "The Haymakers," and is very pretty. It will have to be. given in character, which means every member committing his or her part to memory, no easy task £ but the effect will be greatly enhanced. The conductor, Mr. E. Edridge, intends to have something superior to "The Haymakers" to putbefore the public at the end of tho season. Tho Fire Brigade are--to hold a dance in the Oddfellows' Hall on Friday, the sth July, and intend making it a popular affair. They, have an excellent object in view, viz.-, to.get funds for the band. Then the Crjcket Club areto follow, on the 19th July, with .a'-eoncert in aid of the clubs-funds; This will also be advertised indue time. ':,

The Social Society mustered strongly last night, between 120 and 130 persons being present. There was plenty of fun, games, and a 'charade entitled Necromancer (neck-crow-mah-sir). It was guess-ed by but few, but evoked much laughter. Music, singing, and supper filled the programme. Next Tuesday the ladies are to provide everything (entertainment and supper). These socials are proving useful in providing the young folk with one evening's wholesome amusement each week.
