THE MANAGEMENT OF BOATS.

TOO SEIIIOXJS FOR A STRIKE

EXISTING .CONDITIONS MODIFIED

London, May 8.

■ A deputation frcm the Seahicn's Dockers', Clerics', Stovcdorqs', . .Stewards', Cooks', Butchers', and _ Bilkers' unions, supporting tho sailors and fivc-r-jon, complained to tho P. and 0. Corn-

pany of -the engagement of non-union-ists, adding that unless the demands were granted there would be a general strike.

The company replied that it was unable to accept the conditions formulated by tho deputation, but was willing to slightly modify the existing conditions. In other respects it was obliged to defend the position under the Merchant Shipping Act. The Mooltan's lifeboats were sufficient to accommodate three times the number carried on the present voyage. It was impossible to substitute English seamen for Lascars in tho tropics to any large extent. After receiving the deputation's reports the Transporters' Emergency Committee resolved that the proper management of tho boats in the interests of human safety was far more important than can be decided by a strike. The whole matter therefore will be referred to the National Executive.
