THE QUEEN'S DRIVE.
PROPOSED FORMATION
SURVEY AND ESTIMATES TO BE PREPARED.
(From "The Colonist," April 13.)
At the meeting of the City Council last night,
Councillor Harloy moved according to notioe: "That with a view to the Colinnil submitting to the ratepayers a proposal for a loan for the construction of a carriage drive round Britannia Heights, the City Engineer be instructed to make a survey of the road from the top of Washington Valley round the heights and through Mr. Henrys' property, terminating either at Bishopdale or down Murphy street, as may be deemed advisable, and an estimate of the cost of construction of the drive with cut-tings-where necessary 16 feet wide." Cr Harley said one of the best drives in New Zealand could bo made. His object was to obtain an approximate estimate of the cost.
Or Adams seconded the resolution. The road, if carried out 3 would be very much appi'eciated by every one in the place, and by visitors.
Or Tasker said the motion tied them to a particular route. He was informed that other property owners would be willing to dispose of land for a road. He thought thoy should consider all available routes.
Cr Harley said he was quite willing to give effect to Cr Tasker's .proposal in the resolution. He would, with permission, insert the words "or elsewhere" after tho word "property" in the resolution.
Cr Kershaw thought the selection. pf tlio route should bo left to the City Engineer.
Or Fell said he was sorry to appear to throw cold water upon an excellent scheme, but while their finances were in tho present state bo could not support the proposal. They could not find money for works for which there was urgent demand. He' moved as an amendment "That the City Engineer m.-ik» a survey of a road fmm tilio top of Washington Valley round Britannia Heights, with an estimate of the cost." That would not commit them to the-schemo, as they otherwise would be if the cost were reasonable. ? "Or Bisley seconded the amendment. Cr Harlev said he hnd no objection.to the •amendment. All he wanted was ■something definite to go on. The amendment was carried.
