ILLEGALLY OPENING TELEGRAMS

Auckland, May 8. Thomas Henderson,1 a young man, with eeyeral aliases, was to-day found guiltj of charges of opening telegrams sent from Fred Jewell to T. Phillips. Evidence was given by two telegraph messengers that they went with telegrams addressed to Phillips. Not knowing his address they went into a, tobacconist's shop to inquire, tho -accused was there, and ho said ho would take the telegrams as. Philiipß was his oouein. tie -opened .them and took notes in a pocket boot. Afterwards accused sealed them up with stickers, which ho persuaded tho boys to get /rom the Telegraph Office. Mr. Justice Chapman inflicted a sentence, of 18 months' hard labour.
