THE PRICE OF GROCERIES.

NO RISE ANTICIPATED

(Special to "The Colonist.")

Christchurch, May 8. With a view to ascertaining local, opinion on the general rise of prices in. general groceries predicted in a telegram from Auckland, a reporter spoko to a number of .wholesale merchants and retailers in the trade- in Christclmrch. The concensus of views obtained was on the whole against the idea of any such rise. Of course, as was pointed out by one gentleman there has been for years, and must continue to be, a steady upward tendency in the- price of goods accompanying the riso in wages, but no special ri&e need Ijjv anticipated, at any rate in Christchurch. The manager of one well known firm expressed th^ opinion that the predicted rise in prices in the North Island was no doubt caused by the .high demands of the warehousemen's unions which do not at present exist here. Fluctuation, of coursd, occurred 'in various cases, but tho keen competition in the trade kept prices down as low as could be expected and he for one, did not anticipate anj general rise in prices.
