COALMINERS' TROUBLE AT GREEN ISLAND.

Christchurch, May 7. Mr. R. Webb, of the Labour Federation, passed through here .yesterday, on his way to Dunedin to deal with the Green Island coal mine 'trouble. ,He stated the Labour Federation was oppo?ed to the compulsory clauses of the Dc<fenoo Act, but he did not think that it would advocate a strike ai& a means ;of getting them repealed. The Federation so far from aiding and abetting industrial warfare had played an important part dn securing and maintaining peace. Speaking of the Green Island coal mine trouble, Mr. Webb said that the men ceased work against the wishes of the Labour Federation. They explained that they did so because the position of affairs had. m&de it impossible for them to continue. As soon as he arrived, ho wou.d visit the faces, and as. a practical man he would be able to tell whether their action was justified or uot.
