SUPPLIES TO PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS.

ACTION BY THE RETAIL HOUSES

At tue meeting of retailors .held last evening at Mercer's room, Mr. 11. Allan was voted to the chair.

Tho deputation that was appointed to wait upon the College governors and the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board reported as to the interviews with thosebodies.

With regard to the Colleges, it was reported that in the case of largo orders tenders would be invited from "a few houses, but the small orders would be dealt with as at present. The meeting deemed this 'proposal as being very unsatisfactory. It was resolved that a deputation wait on Mr. R. Atraore, M.P., and urge him to endeavour to get the, constitution or the Colleges altered, so as to mako tne iioard of Governors elective instead of nominative, as at present. It was. considered that such a change, would bothe best m«ans of the retail houses obtaining fair play. With regards'- to ..tb.e Hospital affij! Charitable Aid Board's supplies it was resoliod.to defer th?.matter until that board had dealt with the notice, of motion given by Mr. T. A. H. Field at the last meeting of the Board. With regard to the Stoke- Industrial School supplies, « letter sont to the Education Department was agreed to. Tin* letter pointed out the unfair method of obtaining furnishing, clothing, drapery, and hardware for that institution setting that at present one firm only in Nelson practically had the whole of the businoss. This was protested against as being wrong in principle, and it was urged that as the institution was main-, tamed by public money the. supplies; should be tendered for yearly. A copyof tlie letter was sent to the managexof the institution at Stokcj.

After considering some business connected with the wholesale houses, tho. meeting adjourned. The next meeting will bo called by advertisement.
