(Received May 6, 9.45 p.m.)

Sydney, May f>.

At a sitting of the Sugar Commission the chairman announced that .in view of certain facts which had been published the Bon W. He then called upon tho Hon Mr Kn^x and the other directors of the Sugar Cojnpany to appear, but all failed to respond.

The chairman stated that he will now leave the matter in the hands of the Federal Government.

The Commission was then adjourned till Thursday.

The Hon Mr Knox forwarded a lett?r stating that he would appear when Ije had tho assurance of the Commission that tho statement which had»:i<. jen tendered by him would be received >i full as part of the record of tho Commission, and when a record of the i>\idence already taken had been supplied to him, and time and opportunity had been given to him to reply to it.

Later the chairman of tho Company wrote stating that' the absence of himself and his co-directors was a .protest against the treatment which the company and tho general manager had received at the hands of the Commission. They were prepared to attend if, after the Hon Mr Knox had presented the company's case, and had had the opportunity of replying to the evidence already taken, the Commissioners were, still of the opinion that a useful purpose would be served.

The Hon. Wra, Hughes, Attorney-Gen-eral, stated that he had given instructions for certain steps to be taken.
