QUARTERMASTER IN CUSTODY.
PASSENGER'S STATEMENT DENIED. Hitchings, tho Titanic's quartermaster, was served with a subpoena on board the Celtic at New York. He ;.r----rived at Washington in custody. Hitchings denied that when passengers asked that his boat should return to rescue the drowning, he said they "Weren't going back after those stiffs." Nevertheless it was impossible to return.
