Auckland, April 5

The steamer Wakanui's departure for Wellington was delayed yesterday by a Court case in which Thomas Ashford. a member of the crow, was charged with having assaulted the captain, the charge being met by an allegation that the assault was provoked, and that injuries were, sustained by tho defendant, caused by the captain using, a sling shot in the-struggle with accused.

The Court said tho case was a difficult one, but found Asliford. guilty, riid sentenced him. to one month's hard labour.

Tho departure of the vessel was fur-

ther delayed till 2 p.m. to-day by eight of the crew deserting.
