SPRAYING TURNIPS.
Speaking to a gathering of farmers, Mr John Grigg, of Longbeach, who has lately returned from a visit to the Homo Country suggested th.it spraying the turnips would be a practical and effective method of dealing with the nhoma and aphis. He said: "It has been found out lately that sulphate or copper and soda mixed will kill the fi;ngus 'phona' and tho worm of the diamond-backed moth if sprayed on to tiio crop. The same sprayer is used on potatoes, and does five- or seven rows at a time. I saw thousands of acres of potatoes in England and Ireland, and no blight except in .small gardens where the potatoes had been neglected. It is better to have fifty acres of good turnips than none, so, with our water go .handy, we may have to spray turnips, as this fungus lies on the ground ready to go on to the turnips every year. The 'phoma' comes on mangolds, but the, mangold is too vigorous in growth and resists it, although it does not affect the growth much in a dry season."
